동국대학교 Global MBA 과정의 학생들을 대상으로, “Entrepreneurship & New Venture Creation” 이라는 강좌를 한 학기 동안 운영하였다.

본 강좌의 특성은, 약 20여개국에서 온 26명의 다국적 국제학생으로 이루어진 강좌이다.

이 학생들은 전반부에는 Entrepreneurship에 대한 실제적 이해를 갖는 내용을 중심으로 학습을 하였고, 후반부에는 가상창업 및 모의투자의사결정을 하는 것을 전제로 한 프로젝트 기반 학습을 전개하였다. 4차례의 현장 방문 수업을 통해 ‘대기업-스타트업-공공스타트업지원기관-스타트업엑셀러레이터’의 운영 및 제반 특성들에 대해 살펴 보는 과정도 있었다.

한 학기가 모두 종료되고 나서, 학생들에게 ‘가상 창업 프로젝트와 모의투자의사결정’을 통해 어떤 배움을 얻었는지 에세이를 작성하도록 하였다.

이 중 독일에서 온 한 학생의 에세이가 인상적이라 이를 함께 공유하고자 한다. 창업자 그리고 창업교육자 모두에게 참고가 될 만한 내용들을 기술하고 있다. 이를 통해 어떤 형태의 접근법이 창업교육의 효과성을 증진 시키는데 유익할 것이며, 학생들이 어떤 학습과 배움을 지닐 수 있도록 하는 것이 합목적적일지 논의의 장이 마련 될 수 있기를 기대한다.

 What Lessons did you learn from this Virtual Startup Project and Mock Investment Decisions?

I was able to learn many things from the virtual startup project. On the one hand, I learned that especially the work in a multinational team can be very challenging. A reason for this is that the language barrier sometimes makes it difficult to express oneself as one would like to. On the other hand, different cultural backgrounds can lead to different understandings of certain situations. This means that misunderstandings can occur very easily. I, therefore, learned that an open, respectful, and steady exchange inside the team is an important basis for a successful cooperation. I strongly believe that all of the team members of MyLuggage.com succeeded in this.

Furthermore, I learned how good it is for such a demanding project to work together in a team which pulls together and which can be trusted.

Additionally, I learned that the establishment of a startup is very demanding. Although the situation was simulated, one identified quickly with the business, wanted to do it as good as possible which could be very stressful. Here, I learned that besides risk appetite and stress resistance, strong nerves and confidence have to be present for the establishment of a startup as well. All these factors ensured that the startup idea did not burn out but that one can burn for the startup and give one’s best. Furthermore, I learned that a good preparation can be crucial for the success of a startup. By this, I mean not to get lost in many details in the beginning but to create a broad base for further steps. On the other hand, it is important to see one’s company not only from one’s own perspective but also from that of the stake holder. The result is that risks do not get hidden or the idea gets transfigured but it gets toughly and thoroughly analyzed. Since only when dangers (such as financing) are faced, they can be averted and kept at distance to the business.

I think it is important to have a vision or a goal during the whole process but also to be clear about that the path will not always be easy. So, you have to believe in your project but you have to analyze thoroughly if it pays off in the long run to invest energy, money, and confidence in the project. I think it is the most challenging part of establishing a business to know when it pays off to fight but also when it is time to surrender in order to prevent, for example, financial ruin. Especially for this reason, an exchange with other, outside observers, who can give an objective feedback, is important.

For an investment decision, I see all of the factors mentioned above as important. If you want to invest in a startup as, for example, an investor, many different aspects have to be taken into account.

Hereby, I think that an investment is preceded by a thorough, economic analysis (e.g. target market, financial situation, uniqueness of the idea and so on) but with the goal to give wings to a profitable vision.

Therefore, not only the earnings outlook counts for the willingness to make an investment. I am convinced that also other criteria play an important role in the process. On the one hand, one has to identify oneself with the idea of the project at least a little bit and see its potential. Furthermore, one has to be clear about not only to be investing in a project but also a team which carries the project. Is the team is congenial, does it pull together, and do we share the same future expectations? These are important questions which one has to ask oneself before an investment.
